Little Fish!

Tonight we took Meatball for his first dip in a swimming pool. We have been in the lake a lot this summer but not yet to the pool. Luke LOVED his inaugural trip! He is a natural in the water and loved splashing the water with his hands, kicking his legs, spinning in circles and even putting his face in the water a bit!

We played a little peek-a-boo in the water and enjoyed cooling off a bit in these hot temperatures!

The little man was a smiley and giggly as can be!

I have a feeling some swimming lessons are in our very near future!

Lucky Lady

I like to think that I can do it all. I have to admit that lately I have been feeling pretty overwhelmed and exhausted. Whether one chooses to work or stay at home (each of these carries its own joys and burdens) the tasks of motherhood and life can catch up with you at times. I think about how crazy my days feel, how I feel that I have no time for myself, friends or my marriage at times, that I feel “mommy guilt” if I don’t spend all my available time with Luke, and then I realize I only have ONE child…and that child is involved in no activities, sports, does not have homework etc. So basically, this is as easy as its ever going to be! Wow…those thoughts have made me feel a little heavy lately…this weekend was a great wake up call for me that I am a very lucky lady! Drew is incredibly helpful, more so than the average husband. He is committed to helping me find time for “me”….I just need to be willing to take him up on the offer occasionally! He is an amazing daddy. Then there is Luke, the most special little person I have ever laid eyes on! He makes everything worthwhile! It isn’t that I didn’t realize these things before, just that I allowed the stresses of life to occupy my mind versus the joys of life.

Friday was my birthday and I was very spoiled by my boys. Drew surprised me by having this blog put in to book form! Talk about the ultimate baby book! It is such a treasure and it will be so fun to look back on this first year, our experiences and all the pictures as the years go by. He also got me a flip video camera which I am pumped about; get ready to see some video clips of our little man in action and by action I definitely mean in action, he is on the go!

We had friends and family over on Friday night and it was good to get some kid and friend time with a few of my favorite people.

We spent an awesome day on Saturday at the lake for Lake Lotawana Day. The day is filled with tons of fun activities like a run, kayak races, swim races, a boat parade, sailing races, a water ski show, etc. It is such a great little community and I enjoyed getting to share it all with Luke this year! Its hard to believe that last year at this time he was in my belly and we didn’t know him….and now this year he is so active and has such a personality!

Luke had one of his best days ever on Saturday! He played in bed with us in the morning and just couldn’t stop giggling! He showed us lots of new moves on Saturday and he was very tickled with himself. He was pulling up, consistently crawling (not combat crawling finally) and climbing up and down the little stairs at the lake. We enjoyed a nice dinner out and then relaxed to one of the best storms in a long time topped off with an amazing double rainbow!

Sunday Luke’s friend Sam came to the lake to play in Luke’s new pool and then we came back to town so I could enjoy a pedicure with a great friend.

This week has kicked off with its own new set of stresses, but Luke’s little smiles are great to come home to! We are looking forward to 10 days of uninterrupted family time beginning the end of this week. Keep your fingers crossed that Luke’s first little tooth doesn’t decided to pop through just in time for his first flight!

Skinny Dipping!

This weekend it was too hot to do much else but swim and enjoy the lake! Luke spent lots of time skinny dipping! These photos are courtesy of my mobile uploads because I forgot my camera this weekend! Luke is getting more adventurous and even spent some time in his life vest today swimming in the lake with Mommy and Daddy! We had LOTS of swimming time this weekend because for the last week Luke has decided that he is WAY too grown up to take naps...Mom and Dad disagree, but so far Luke is winning the battle.

We will also be looking for a larger baby pool this week with higher sides because Luke spends more time crawling out of the pool than playing in it!

One day Luke will probably be mortified that I put this picture on the Internet but really is there anything cuter than chubby baby legs, booty and back rolls? What a Meatball!
We are gearing up for our big trip back East to New Hampshire and Vermont to visit Aunt Jenny and Uncle Aaron and Aunt Nellie! Hopefully by the time we leave in a week and half Luke will have figured out that naps are WAY more fun than staying up all day!

8 Months and Chasing!

Meatball is 8 months old today! It's hard to believe how quickly time is flying...his birthday is starting to feel just around the corner! Luke is growing exponentially (not so much in size) but in ability, exploration, mischievousness (he gets that from Drew!) and mobility!

The days of sitting him on the floor and knowing he wouldn't move or go very far if he did decide to explore are LONG gone! This weekend Luke literally explored every square inch of the main level of our home, including dog food bowls, dog water bowls, cabinets, drawers, plants, you get the drift!

This picture sums it up well...Luke is reaching for everything! He is so fascinated by everything, mostly things that ARE NOT intended for him! This weekend he quickly realized that when he got in to something I would quickly pick him up to redirect him...SO, when he would see me coming for him he would start to move faster and look back at me and just giggle....oh brother, I am in for it!
I feel like he is beginning to look less and less like a baby and more like a toddler...the hair definitely helps but he just looks like such a big boy!

He continues to be such a delight and we just can't get enough of this guy! He keeps us giggling and now also chasing all day!

Omnivore

What a crazy busy week it has been! The big news of the day is that Luke is no longer a herbivore, but an official omnivore, he had his first taste of meat today...chicken with sweet potatoes! He is definitely his daddy's boy because he LOVED his first taste of meat! I am excited that we are finally at the stage where we can start to grind up our dinner to feed to Luke, it will make things much easier!

This week I got my first real taste of what single parenthood would be like...I am not a fan! Drew was out of town for consecutive nights for the first time since I have returned to work. I have the utmost respect for all the single parents out there, it is hard work to do it all while working full time! We were very excited to have Daddy come home!

This weekend we went down to the Ozarks to join our friends for the 4th of July. This year was VERY different from years past...the idea of a "party" consists more of watching the babies crawl around the floor and our late nights have definitely gotten earlier! We had a great time catching up with good friends. Luke was excited to check out all of Elise's new moves since she has about a month on him in age!

Last Thursday we also got to hang out with Ashlee as she was passing through town! It was so fun to spend a couple quick days with her and Luke loved getting to play with his godmother!

Luke's personality is blossoming by the day and watching him grow and change just awes me. He is very determined (I wonder where he gets that!) Once he has something on his mind he is bound and determined to get his way. He is obsessed with the gas key for our fire place...despite the fact that we have removed the key he continues to go back to the spot and put his fingers down in the key hole. Regardless of where I set Luke down in the house he seems to quickly find his way back to this spot!

He wants to touch and grab everything in sight (rarely his own toys though!). Here he is enamored with the hinge on the door...this lasted a good 15 minutes before he was sure he had memorized exactly how it all worked! He is still very interested in our cell phones. Drew and I each have an old BlackBerry that we no longer use so we took the battery out of one and gave it to Luke as a toy...unfortunately it didn't take him long to realize that his phone didn't light up, so he is still after our phones!
We are still working on the "official" crawl. Luke prefers to pull himself along with his left arm and his right leg doing all the work and his belly on the floor. He definitely gets up on all fours, but he can move faster slithering on his belly. I think I am going to start attaching a swiffer pad to his belly so I can at least have some clean floors!

I feel like instead of being "mom" I am actually Luke's personal jungle gym! He climbs all over me, giggling the entire time. It amazes me how mobile he is becoming! He is very vocal, more so each day and still just as flirty as can be. I think he has figured out the camera too, (I might be creating this in my head) as soon as I take it out he looks at me and smiles big as can be!

Today I had the day off of work and it was so nice to be home with Luke. Since we spend every weekend at the lake I haven't had a day at home with him for several months. I felt like it was the good old days when I was on maternity leave! We enjoyed not having to rush around this morning to get out of the house on time and just playing and laughing together all day. My favorite part of the day though was getting to be there when he woke up from his naps! He gets so excited and his little voice calling out when he wakes up always gets me excited to see his smiling little face!

After all the excitement of the past few weeks there is just nothing sweeter than a sleeping baby. I feel like we are so busy all of the time (I can't believe I ever thought I was busy before we had Luke!) and always on the go, but I know that someday I will look back on this time when we (God willing) have more children and feel like this time in our lives was laid back!
